Hackintosh results

In the last week or so since I made the guide I estimate there to be around five or six hundred people that did this based on the downloaded files for the video and bios flash.
Which also means a lot of people are emailing me for different kinds of help, as you can imagine it is difficult to keep up. So I would like for anybody that has problems/issues to comment on this post as other people may be able to help with certain things, you can still feel free to email me as well.

I burned mine at 2x, i say try again(use dvdrw's) and see if that works. I think thats just a burning issue imo

@m I had the same issue when I was installing it on my Wind netbook; @Tortri is right, it is a burning/disc problem. Just burn another disc, and make SURE there isn't the SLIGHTEST scratch... it may be worth trying that disc a few more times. All in all, good luck!

Would this machine as built be capable of running and displaying high quality (not HD, but video-intensive) Keynote presentation?

I am sure it would, although there could be a little lag at times, just a little.

Steve, is that sarcasm I detect?

No it wasnt intended as sarcasm, which in retrospect I see how one can interpret it as so. There might be a little lag, however I have not tried it so I am not sure.

If you were to do this on the wind netbook, what would you do differently?

Actually, I'm writing this from a MSI Wind U100 running OSX Leopard; so, in answer to your question C. Carlisle, not a whole lot. The hardest part is what kind of install media you use. I used a DVD because I had a DVD drive and IDE/USB adaptor and a external hard drive power adapter. In fact, our next guide is going to be how to install Windows 7 build 7000 and then Leopard.
Back to actually answering the question though... a simplified version of it would be boot to MSIWindOSX86.iso some way and format (and if you feel like it, partition) the hard drive, and remember to uncheck the kernel. Everything works except mic and audio out/audio in. You have to find a driver for the wifi card... it's not officially released by Realtek, but it was being distributed on a MSI Wind forum by Realtek employees. I'd suggest you download it before doing the install and toss it on a thumbdrive. http://www.google.com/search?q=realtek+wireless+driver+mac+os+x+wind+u100
There are links on the first few result pages to the forum, just scroll through the pages till you find a download. And lastly, I'm not sure what BIOS version you should have, but having the most recent (which I do) can't hurt.

I keep looking for the realtek drivers, but am not having much success. If there is any way you could either send it to me via email or by any means you wish, I would be very grateful. I think my email is in my blogger info if you want it. Thanks!

After I spent a good forty minutes looking for it, Steve found it in under 3... the forum page that it was linked in was down, but Steve had the genius idea to try google's cache. So, we've mirrored it here.

Thanks! And is there any way to update the bios on my wind nettop running osx to overclock the cpu? Any ideas?

Is there a limit on the display resolution if I follow this build? I have a 1920x1080 widescreen LCD monitor, and would like to know if the native resolution is supported before I purchase all the parts. If not, what is the maximum resolution?

Thanks!

How do we update to os x 10.5.6 so I can run iLife 09?

I am currently finding away to up date, I have a feeling that it will require a full reinstall. I will post my findings before the end of the weekend.

I followed the instructions and had a perfect install experience. Thank you so much for taking the time to put the instructions together. Saved me a bunch of money. Now I have a small file server on my network without the expense.

I forgot to say thanks for posting the instructions. Three OS X boxes running smoothly which would not have happened with the help. Hopefully a method for upgrading will come along so we can get iLife 09 running ...

you can upgrade from the 10.5.4 installed with the msiwindos86x.iso to 10.5.6 from the apple updater with no problems.

When I upgraded to 10.5.6, everything went fine except video resolution. I tried reinstalling the drivers, but it is stuck at 800x600.

I also successfully upgraded to 10.5.6, but I downloaded 10.5.5 from Apple first, then installed other updates through auto update. After each update I re-applied the graphics patch. I have noticed some features missing and some not working (like auto on and off at scheduled times) in system preferences, but not sure if they were missing prior to upgrading to 10.5.6. My box usually will not fully power off on its own anymore. It restarts fine though.

Can anyone confirm the problems that would occur if we updated to 10.5.6? How would we know if it's truly "successful?"

March 18, 2009 10:01 AM

I was under the impression that updating system related files would break the install, but it doesn't. I did all my updates to 10.5.6 directly through Apple's "Software Update ...". I skipped all AirPort updates as thye're not needed on my box.
Video defaulted to 800x600 - even after reinstalling the video drivers from this website and restarting. I had to go into System > Library > Extensions and delete the old video driver files of which there where multiples. I deleted "AppleIntelGMA950.ktext" and another named "AppleIntelGMA950.ktext.original". Also deleted "AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext". Run the video driver installer again from this website, restart and choose the correct resolution for your display.

Problems with Time Machine? - look at post #2 for a solution that worked for me. Also fixed Netflix and abc.com problems and got rid of UUID errors:

So based on the guide, you need to change to FULLspeed(12mbps) without being able to change it back. So, the box then has no functioning USB 2.0, correct. No fast transfers? Is there a work around, or a different Hack method that will allow there to be HiSpeed USB?

Getting a dual core on Monday, should upgrading to 10.5.8 from the MSIWindosx86.iso install present any problems? I don't see a need for Snow Leopard on this box yet. It's going to run Boxee almost exclusively.

It keeps stopping here. I have tried multiple burns, various speeds, on a Mac and a PC. Could it be because I am using a USB DVD drive. I had no plans to put a DVD drive in here so I did not buy one. I also tried restoring the image to a thumb drive, compact flash card, and even a partition on the drive. All never get past the blinking white line.

The furthest I got was to boot my MacBook from the MSIWindosx86.iso Disk I burned, and to install to the HD connected via USB (with the settings described). When back in the Wind, it got to the grey screen with an apple, but no further.

Ideas?

I got it working. To boot from an external USB DVD drive I needed to change USB to FULLspeed. Though it clearly installed at HiSpeed USB. Combo Updated right to 10.5.6, installed Video Driver, reboot and I am golden. I am opting not to go any further due to Hyper-threading issues

All is well, plays 1080 trailers (once fully downloaded) beautifully.

Netflix is a bit jumpy at times.

Pair it with RowMote, and you're on top of the world.

Thanks for the guide.
